Hermione Granger - asked by m@ gurlz nakedhermione and ruperts, plus a few others
How I feel about this character: There’s not much i DON’T feel about Hermione, to be honest. One of the things that makes her such a good character is that, unlike a lot of others, the essence of her character doesn’t change, and instead our perspective of her develops over time. By DH Hermione is, at her core, still the brainy girl Ron teased in Philosopher’s Stone, but we, like Harry and Ron, have come to see those things not as flaws but as her greatest assets; countless people have noted how screwed Harry would be without Hermione. Another thing I love about her is that Hermione has an inherent strength that just doesn’t waver for anything. The sheer bravery that she shows - when she’s helping Harry in GOF, erasing her parents’ memories, standing by Harry when Ron decides to leave - is reflective of her strength of character, and her ability to put aside any fears or indecision she may feel when she’s needed by her friends. Hermione is probably the character with the purest intentions; she legitimately wants what’s best for everyone. Even if it doesn’t make her the most popular person (LET’S ALL COLD SHOULDER HERMIONE BECAUSE SHE’S THE ONLY ONE SMART ENOUGH TO THINK THE FIREBOLT MAY ACTUALLY BE SOME KIND OF DEATH MACHINE SENT TO HARRY BY NOTORIOUS MASS MURDERER SIRIUS BLACK), she sticks to her guns, and that’s pretty spectacular. Hermione knows who she is, and won’t change for anyone, and I think that’s an amazing quality in any character, but especially a teenage girl. A day in the life of Hermione would be interesting, to say the least - at any given time she’s on top of her classes, navigating the social world of high school, trying to figure out what the hell is going on between her and Ron, and worrying her brain out over whatever’s eating Harry up. And then when you get to DH she’s nothing short of phenomenal. Ron’s right - they wouldn’t last two minutes without her, and it’s not just because she’s wily as fuck: the trio’s dynamic is evened out by Hermione. If Hermione had left instead in DH, Ron and Harry were on their own would have resembled a Eurotrip sequel. She keeps them in line and I love that about their relationship.
All the people I ship romantically with this character: The only person who Hermione can be with - Ron. Simply put, Hermione and Ron are good together because they’re meant to be together. They’re one half of the same whole. Hermione sorts out her feelings a lot quicker than Ron and i love that, because it’s just so Hermione, isn’t it? To sit down and figure out what’s going on in her ~romance life and to try and square it away, but the thing about her relationship with Ron is that it takes Hermione out of her comfort zone, and even when he’s not trying to Ron will get a reaction out of her - usually of the angry kind - and that’s because Ron gets under her skin. He irritates her, but at the same time Hermione sees so many good things in Ron, and she tries her hardest to show him that she doesn’t think he’s second best to anyone. It gets to the point where Hermione can’t imagine her life without Ron, and, more importantly, doesn’t want to. And after that is the opus of Deathly Hallows, because if there’s one thing that’s going to make two people admit their love to each other it’s being in the center of an all out devastating wizarding war. They’re just a spectular relationship and I love where it takes them as characters individually, as well as together.
My non-romantic OTP for this character: HARRY AND HERMIONE’S FRIENDSHIP MAKES DOUBLE RAINBOWS IN THE SKY. The great thing about Hermione is that she cares about Harry so much that she’s not afraid to do what’s best for him (see: the POA Firebolt debacle). Hermione is important to Harry, not just for her intelligence or resoucefulness, but because she loves him unconditionally, and no matter what will always stand by him. If the Weasleys are the family Harry never had, Hermione is his older sister; sometimes nagging and a little annoying, but always there to look out for him, especially when he’s too stupid to look out for himself. (Oh, I’ve been unwillingly entered into a tournament that could end up killing me? I’LL JUST SIT AROUND FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS AND NOT PREPARE FOR THE TASKS, THAT’S AN AWESOME IDEA. REALLY INSPIRED.) More than that, though, is that Hermione sees Harry exactly for who he is. In OOTP she can’t help but ask Harry if by going to look for Sirius he’s “playing the hero”, not only because she’s worried about him but because she sees quite clearly how Harry is constantly terrified of losing people (how quickly he thinks Ron will die at the bottom of the lake if Harry doesn’t save him, anyone?) and she wants him to know that he can’t live his life like that. Imagine how awful it must have been for Hermione, who has always stood by Harry, and who knows the full scope and tragedy of his life, to have to choose between staying with her best friend, who needs her, or to leave with the person she loves? And what’s worse is that she wants to choose Ron, because she knows how he feels like he’s second best, and she can’t bear the thought of enabling that, but she knows Harry’s journey and destroying the Horcruxes is so much bigger than anything she feels, and she won’t leave Harry to bear that burden alone, so she has to stay with him, and it just shreds her to pieces inside. HERMIONE IS A FUCKING QUEEN OK. SHE HAS THE EMOTIONAL RANGE OF AN ENTIRE CUTLERY SET.
My unpopular opinion about this character: I honestly don’t think I have one. I don’t see/ship Dramione?
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: Again, I would’ve loved to have seen Hermione - especially the development of her relationship with Ron - post DH. THAT’S WHERE IT ALL HAPPENED OK GUYS, THAT’S WHERE THEY BUILT A LIFE TOGETHER AND I WANT TO SEE IT. I think there would’ve been a lot of post-war shit for all of the Trio to get through, especially Hermione, with having to go and get her parents and rebuilding her life, and that would make for some really poignant storytelling imo. I write fic about it wayyy too often.
